Affordable therapy options for men in New Brunswick

June is Men’s Health Month—a time to shine a light on the unique health challenges men face, especially when it comes to mental health. While conversations around mental wellness are becoming more common, many men still face a silent struggle. Social expectations, stigma and financial concerns often keep men from reaching out for the help they need.

At Just Us Counselling, we want to change that. We believe mental health support should be accessible, affordable and stigma-free for everyone, including men. Whether you’re dealing with stress, depression, grief, anger, relationship challenges or something you can’t quite name yet, you're not alone—and you don’t have to carry it alone.

The truth about men and mental health

Men are often expected to “tough it out” or keep things to themselves. But the truth is, mental health challenges don’t discriminate, and neither should support. According to Western University, 1 in 10 men experience significant mental health issues, including anxiety and depression. Yet research shows that men are far less likely to seek counselling compared to women. Furthermore, data from the Centre for Suicide Prevention shows that, of the 4,000 suicides in Canada each year, approximately 75% of them are committed by men.

Why? Because stigma still tells men they shouldn’t ask for help. That they should “man up.” That it’s weak to admit you’re struggling.

We know that couldn’t be further from the truth. Reaching out is not a sign of weakness—it’s a step toward strength, healing, and a better future.

Other low-cost supports in New Brunswick

In addition to Just Us, here are a few more affordable mental health options for men in New Brunswick:

  • Employee Assistance Programs (EAP): If you’re employed, check whether your workplace offers free counselling services

  • Community Health Centres: Some offer mental health services at low or no cost

  • Sliding Scale Therapists: Many private therapists offer sliding scale fees based on your income.

  • University Counselling Services: If you’re a student at the University of New Brunswick or other post-secondary institutions, take advantage of the free or low-cost counselling services available on campus.

We also encourage men to connect with local men’s groups, faith-based support or culturally relevant resources, especially for Indigenous, immigrant or 2SLGBTQ+ men, who may face additional barriers.

You deserve support, too

You don’t have to hit “rock bottom” to benefit from therapy. In fact, many men come to counselling because they want to be better partners, parents, coworkers, or simply feel more like themselves again. Some are navigating job stress, others are dealing with loss, anger or burnout. Some just need a space to unload without being judged or told to “suck it up.”

Whatever brings you in, you’ll be met with compassion, not judgment.

Take a step

This Men’s Health Month, we invite you to take one small step toward your mental health — whether it’s booking a session, talking to a friend or just being honest with yourself about how you’re doing.

If you’re a man who’s been putting off getting help because it feels too expensive, too uncomfortable or just too hard to start, know this:

  • Support is available

  • It doesn’t have to cost a lot

  • You don’t have to do this alone

And above all, you are not weak for wanting to feel better. You're human.
