More than numbers: The stories behind our year in review

Earlier this April, we had the opportunity to come together for our Annual General Meeting (AGM). It was a meaningful moment to reflect—not just on the past year, but on the people, stories and shared commitment that continue to shape this work across New Brunswick.

Our AGM is always a space grounded in openness and community. It’s where we pause to acknowledge progress, share what we’ve learned, and look ahead with intention. This year’s gathering felt especially significant as we reflected on a year of real growth and deepened impact.

A year rooted in purpose

This past year marked the first full year of leadership for our Board Chair, Laura Gatien, in her new role following a transition from Founder & CEO. That continuity has helped us stay closely connected to what has always guided Just Us: the belief that everyone deserves access to mental health support, regardless of financial circumstances.

That belief continues to shape every part of our work—from how we deliver care to how we build partnerships across the province.

What growth really looks like

Over the past year, we’ve seen growth in ways that reflect both increased need and increased access:

  • Counselling sessions grew from 1,743 to 2,392—an increase of over 37%

  • The number of people accessing support rose from 359 to 481 individuals

  • Our internship program expanded to 15 interns from five universities

  • Community partnerships increased from 4 to 16 across New Brunswick

These aren’t just numbers—they represent people reaching out, often for the first time, and finding support when they need it.

Why our work matters

Across New Brunswick, accessing mental health care isn’t always easy. Long wait times and cost can make it feel out of reach.

  • 66% of clients told us they wouldn’t have accessed support without affordable options

  • 90% received timely care, when it mattered most

  • 100% said counselling helped address the challenges they came in with

That tells us something important: when barriers are removed, meaningful support is possible.

One client shared:

“Without your program I would still be home laying in bed 90% of the time.”

Another said:

“It gives me peace of mind to get the help I need without worrying about financial stress.”

These stories stayed with us during the AGM—and continue to guide the work ahead.

Community makes this possible

Everything we shared at the AGM comes back to people.

This work is made possible by:

  • Our counselling interns and dedicated staff

  • A thoughtful and committed Board

  • Community partners across the province

  • Donors and supporters who believe in accessible care

This past year, our partnerships grew significantly, reflecting a shared commitment across New Brunswick to make mental health support more visible, more accessible and more connected to community.

Looking ahead

As we move forward from this year’s AGM, our focus remains steady:

  • Expanding access to free and low-cost counselling

  • Strengthening partnerships across communities

  • Increasing our capacity to meet growing demand

  • Ensuring long-term sustainability so this work can continue

Because this work isn’t just about responding to crisis—it’s about creating space for support earlier, building resilience, and making care part of everyday life.
