What to expect from free mental health services: A guide for first-timers
Taking the first step toward mental health support can feel overwhelming.
You might be wondering what counselling is actually like, whether your concerns are "serious enough" or what will happen when you reach out. If you've never accessed mental health services before, it's completely normal to have questions.
The truth is that seeking support doesn't mean something is wrong with you. It means you're taking care of yourself.
Whether you're dealing with stress, anxiety, grief, relationship challenges, burnout or simply feeling stuck, free mental health services can provide a safe and supportive space to talk things through. This guide will walk you through what you can expect and help make that first step feel a little less intimidating.
You don't need to be in crisis to ask for help
One of the biggest misconceptions about counselling is that it's only for people experiencing a major mental health crisis. In reality, many people seek support for everyday challenges, including:
Managing stress and overwhelm
Navigating life transitions
Relationship or family concerns
Workplace or school pressures
Grief and loss
Low mood or anxiety
Building confidence and coping skills
You don't need to wait until things feel unbearable. In fact, reaching out early can help prevent challenges from becoming more difficult over time.
Your first conversation is about getting to know you
The first session is often focused on understanding your situation and what brought you to counselling. You may be asked questions about:
What you're currently experiencing
Your goals for counselling
Your support system
Your personal history
Any concerns you have about the counselling process
There is no test to pass and no perfect way to answer these questions. You can share as much or as little as you feel comfortable sharing.
Counsellors understand that opening up takes time. The first session is as much about you getting to know them as it is about them getting to know you.
You set the pace
Many people worry they'll be expected to talk about their deepest struggles right away. That's not how counselling works.
You are in control of what you share and when you share it. A good counsellor will respect your comfort level and work alongside you at a pace that feels manageable.
Some sessions may involve talking through difficult experiences. Others may focus on practical coping strategies, goal-setting or learning new ways to manage stress and emotions.
There is no "right" way to participate in counselling.
Everything is designed to be a safe space
Confidentiality is one of the foundations of counselling. In most situations, what you share remains private. Your counsellor will explain confidentiality and any legal or ethical limits during your first appointment, so you understand exactly what to expect.
Many people describe feeling relieved after their first session because they finally have a space where they can speak openly without fear of judgment.
Counselling is not about being criticized, analyzed or told what to do. It's about being heard, supported and empowered to make decisions that work for you.
How our free counselling program works
One of the biggest questions people have when reaching out is, "What happens next?"
At Just Us, we've designed our services to be welcoming, accessible and affordable for people across New Brunswick.
When you begin counselling with us, you'll receive three free one-hour counselling sessions with one of our counselling interns. These initial sessions are an opportunity to get comfortable, build rapport and develop a deeper understanding of what you're experiencing.
During these first three appointments, you’ll work together to:
Explore the challenges you're facing
Identify your goals for counselling
Understand the supports you currently have in place
Develop a personalized plan for moving forward
Determine what types of therapeutic approaches may be most helpful for you
Many people find that simply having a dedicated space to talk openly can bring a sense of relief and clarity.
After your three free sessions, you're welcome to continue counselling for up to five additional sessions at a cost of just $20 per appointment.
We recognize that healing doesn't always fit into a set timeline. That's why we never want to turn someone away during a time of need. Arrangements can be made to continue counselling beyond eight sessions at the same reduced rate of $20 per session when additional support is needed.
Flexible options across New Brunswick
We understand that accessing support isn't always easy. That's why we offer virtual counselling appointments to residents across New Brunswick, making it possible to access support from the comfort of your own home.
For those who prefer face-to-face sessions, we also offer in-person counselling in Saint John and Fredericton.
Whether you live in a rural community, have transportation challenges or simply prefer the convenience of online sessions, we want mental health support to be as accessible as possible.
What kind of counselling approaches do we use?
While our counselling interns cannot provide formal diagnoses, they are trained to provide proactive, supportive care using evidence-based therapeutic approaches.
Depending on your needs, your counsellor may draw from approaches such as:
Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) to help you better understand and process emotions
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to explore connections between thoughts, feelings and behaviours
Humanistic approaches that focus on personal growth and self-understanding
Solution-Focused Therapy that helps identify practical steps toward positive change
Strengths-Based approaches that build on your existing resilience and abilities
Every person's experience is different, and your counselling intern will work collaboratively with you to determine what feels most helpful and supportive.
It's okay if it feels uncomfortable at first
Trying something new often comes with uncertainty. You might feel nervous before your first session. You might not know exactly what to say. You might even wonder if counselling is right for you. Those feelings are completely normal.
Many people discover that the hardest part of the process is simply reaching out. Once they take that first step, they often feel a sense of relief knowing they no longer have to carry everything on their own.
Counselling is a process, not a quick fix
While some people notice benefits after just a few sessions, meaningful change often takes time. Counselling is a collaborative process that helps you:
Build self-awareness
Develop healthy coping strategies
Strengthen relationships
Improve emotional resilience
Work toward personal goals
Progress doesn't always happen in a straight line, and that's okay. Every step forward matters.
